SYMANTEC INTERNET SECURITY THREAT REPORT XI

The Symantec Internet Security Threat Report (ISTR) provides a six-month update of Internet threat activity. The March 2007 volume covers the six-month period from July 1 to December 31, 2006. It includes analysis of network-based attacks, a review of known vulnerabilities, and highlights of malicious code. It also discusses numerous issues related to online fraud, including phishing, spam, and security risks such as adware, spyware, and misleading applications.

Among findings revealed in the March 2007 ISTR:

• The United States had a highest proportion of overall malicious activity, with 31 percent; China was second, with 10 percent; and Germany was third, with 7 percent.
• Underground Economy Servers are being used by criminals and criminal organizations to sell stolen information, including government-issued identity numbers, credit cards, bank cards and personal identification numbers (PIN), user accounts, and e-mail address lists.
• About 86 percent of the stolen credit cards advertised on the Internet were issued by banks in the U.S. The United.Kingdom comes in second place accounting for 7 percent of the stolen cards. Stolen credit cards advertised on the Internet range from $1 to $6.
• Trojans constituted 45 percent of the top 50 malicious code samples, representing a 23 percent increase over the first six months of 2006.
• Theft or loss of a computer or data storage medium, such as a USB member key, made up 54 percent of all identity theft-related data breaches.
